Disaster Preparedness

Have you thought of how many different types of disasters our area could experience?   Your disaster response will only be as good as your plan.   Participation in Unity’s “Disaster Preparedness Form” is the first step to a good plan for you.   The information gathered from these forms will also help Unity establish its own Disaster Preparedness Plan that will enable our church to respond appropriately in the event of a major disaster, such as a hurricane or a nuclear event.   Part of that plan is to gather information from all our members about their personal plans in the event of an emergency:  where you would go and how you might be contacted.  One of the lessons learned from other disasters is that people scatter and can be hard to locate.  We hope to create a plan that would allow us to check on each other and provide needed support in a time of turmoil.  Thank you for your help in making this possible.  For your convenience, the form is linked below.  Please complete it and return to the church office.

Disaster Preparedness Team Offers Emergency Kits

Did you know?

Through its Ready Campaign, the US Department of Homeland Security recommends the following 3 Simple Steps to prepare for and respond to potential emergencies:

  1. Get an emergency supply kit
  2. Make a family emergency plan
  3. Be informed about the different types of emergencies that could occur and their appropriate responses

Unity is purchasing two types of emergency supply kits that will be on display beginning March 9. Each kit can be customized to meet the unique needs of your family.

  • The Deluxe Personal Safety Emergency Preparedness Pack $19.95
  •  The Ready-to-Go Emergency Preparedness Kit $35.96

 To purchase either kit:

  • Complete a preorder on Sunday mornings at the Kit display, at the Congregational dinner, or when you are waiting to take pictures for the directory
  • Order online www.redcrossstore.org (item #325622 or 321283)
  •  Call the Red Cross Store at 1.866.632.7751

 More Disaster Tips

Remember, your preparedness for a disaster is only as good as your plan. Start getting your plan together now.   Consider this part of your plan:

Do you have a central out of town emergency contact phone number for your family members? In and emergency, it may be easier to make a long-distance phone call than to call across town, so an out-of-town contact may be in a better position to communicate among separated family members. Be sure every member of your family knows the phone number and has coins or a prepaid phone card to call the emergency contact. You may have trouble getting through, or the telephone system may be down altogether, but be patient.
