The work and worship of Unity Presbyterian Church is governed by two official bodies: the Session and the Board of Deacons. The Session is composed of the pastor, associate pastor, and 18 elders elected from the congregation. The Board of Deacons includes 21 members, also elected from the congregation. The elders and deacons meet monthly and other times, as needed, to oversee all aspects of Unity Church.
Session: The Session is responsible for the mission and government of the church, which includes receiving members, providing for worship, educational programs, approving the annual budget, providing for the administration of the program of the church, maintaining accurate membership rolls, and supervising the work of the deacons. The Session is also charged with maintaining regular and continuing relationships with higher governing bodies including Providence Presbytery and the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The elders meet monthly, except July, and accomplish their work through a number of Ministry Teams.
Deacons: The office of deacon is one of service to include ministering to those in need and to anyone in distress. They serve under the direction of the Session to manage Unity’s building and grounds and oversee the budget process, and follow-up contacts with visitors. The deacons are also responsible for scheduling and overseeing the duties of ushers’ for all worship services, including funerals. Other duties include contacting visitors and maintaining office and audio/visual systems.
