The work and worship of Unity Presbyterian Church is governed by two official bodies: the Session and the Board of Deacons. The Session is composed of the pastor, associate pastor, and 18 elders elected from the congregation. The Board of Deacons includes 21 members, also elected from the congregation. The elders and deacons meet monthly and other times, as needed, to oversee all aspects of Unity Church.

Session: The Session is responsible for the mission and government of the church, which includes receiving members, providing for worship, educational programs, approving the annual budget, providing for the administration of the program of the church, maintaining accurate membership rolls, and supervising the work of the deacons. The Session is also charged with maintaining regular and continuing relationships with higher governing bodies including Providence Presbytery and the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The elders meet monthly, except July, and accomplish their work through a number of Ministry Teams.

Deacons: The office of deacon is one of service to include ministering to those in need and to anyone in distress.  They serve under the direction of the Session to manage Unity’s building and grounds and oversee the budget process, and follow-up contacts with visitors.  The deacons are also responsible for scheduling and overseeing the duties of ushers’ for all worship services, including funerals. Other duties include contacting visitors and maintaining office and audio/visual systems.

Elders

Along with the ministers, elders provide spiritual leadership for the church, and are responsible for its overall functioning. All active church members are eligible for election. Elders serve a three-year term upon the election of the congregation.

Deacons

These officers carry out ministries of compassion within the congregation, as well as other duties assigned by the session. Among the duties currently performed by the deacons are budget management, ushering, upkeep of church property, and contact with church visitors. Deacons serve a three-year term upon the election of the congregation.

Nominating Committee

This team places names before the congregation for election to the offices of elder and deacon.   They may also be asked to bring other nominations to particular offices as needed.

Staff Team

This team provides support and direction for members of the church staff. Includes annual review of salaries and benefits, employment recommendations of non-ordained staff, and support for staff members and their families. Working with the Head of Staff, they carry out a process of evaluation and review, so as to enhance and strengthen the work of each staff member.

Serving Communion in Worship

Ordained elders are needed to assist the session with serving of communion during worship services.

Homebound Communion Visits

Ordained elders are needed to assist the session and ministers in a ministry to our homebound members. Elders and ministers go together to visit and share the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper with those unable to attend worship. These visits normally take place on weekday afternoons, and are scheduled three to four times per year.
