Romans 13:8-10 “…You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Unity is a host church for the Family Promise of York County (formerly Interfaith Hospitality Network of York County). Family Promise is a local non-profit organization that provides meals, shelter, support services, and life skills training for homeless parents and children. The network provides food, shelter, and support to homeless families. In all, thirteen host churches participate in the network. The director interviews and selects homeless families for participation in this program. The network may serve a maximum of 16 people at one time. The 16 could be three to four families depending on the number of children in each family.
As part of the network, host churches provide meals and overnight accommodations for the families for one week at a time, rotating every thirteen weeks. When hosting the families, church members provide the evening and morning meals; convert classrooms to sleeping quarters; and provide additional groceries for the Family Promise Day Center for the week.
Unity participates in this mission by providing sleeping rooms and meals in our church to homeless families one week per quarter. The family capacity is limited to 4 families, with no more than 14 persons total. Family Promise LEADERSHIP TEAM is responsible for recruiting and coordinating volunteers for our host weeks and communicating with the Family Promise Executive Director and Board. MEAL HOSTS are needed to cook and serve dinner to the families. OVERNIGHT HOSTS are needed to sleep at the church overnight and see the families off the next morning. TRANSPORTATION HOSTS are needed to provide transportation to the day center, doctor’s visits, job interviews, etc. GROCERY SHOPPERS are needed to purchase groceries to be used by the families during the week at the Family Promise Center. LINEN WASHERS are needed to wash laundry following our host weeks. SET UP/CLEAN UP TEAM members are needed to help with set up and clean up during our host weeks.
